They discover a strange land where the sun never sets and meet the inhabitants of this land, who are incredibly tall and fair-skinned. They stay with them for two years, during which time they learn about their advanced civilisation and technology. They also discover that the Earth is hollow and that this inner world is inhabited by a separate race of people who are even more advanced than the people they have met on the surface. The inner Earth is illuminated by a central sun, and the inhabitants have harnessed this energy to create a utopian society with no war or poverty. The people of this inner world are telepathic and can communicate with each other without the need for spoken words. Eventually, Jansen and his father leave the inner Earth and return to the surface world. Jansen shares his story with the world, but is met with scepticism and ridicule. "The Smoky God" is a fascinating exploration of the "Hollow Earth" theory, which posits that the Earth is not a solid sphere but rather a hollow shell with an inner surface.
