Author Description

Memoirs of a German Jew, born in 1930 in Pforzheim. When her father was dismissed from his position as a teacher at the local high school in 1933, the family moved to Leipzig, where he found employment at the Jewish Carlebach school until 1939. Describes the gradual discrimination and exclusion process of Jews from cultural and economic life in Germany. After the "Kristallnacht" pogrom Kassewitz's father was imprisoned in Buchenwald for several weeks. With his release, the family began to plan their emigration; they left in June 1939 for Bolivia.
