The global distribution of water and energy is not evenly balanced. Moving into the 21st century, more attention must be placed on sustaining our quality and supply of water and conventional energy. At the same time new sources of both need to be addressed. The facts are that water and energy are separate issues but inextricably linked. Society depends upon energy, which is a global issue. Individual human survival depends upon water. Energy sustainability must be dealt with in a global context because energy resources are valuable enough to be transported to needy areas. Water supply, however, continues to be a regional or local issue, rather than a global issue. The volume of water needed in deficient areas cannot be transported to them within the modern economy. The necessity for global solutions to availability of resources increases daily and geologists have a large role to play.This book is published by the Kansas Geological Survey in association with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the AAPG Division of Environmental Geosciences.
