This book sums up the experience of almost twenty years: the research of Montedison SpA for the safeguarding of the artistic and architectural patrimony of Italy - a heritage threatened by atmospheric pollution as much as by neglect or lack of valuation. The papers are divided into chapters that correspond to the different areas of restoration (frescoes and plaster, bronzes and archeological discoveries, paintings and musical instruments), and document the effort to construct a multidisciplinary science at the service of conservation and restoration.
