In the beginning of the novel Journey to the West, a monk rescues the Monkey King, Sun Wukong, from under a mountain of rock where he has been a prisoner for 500 years. the Birth of the Monkey King relates the creation of Sun Wukong in the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit and how he acquires his magical powers and uses them for mischief, leading to his imprisonment under a mountain.
