Author Description

Drawing on stories of her mother's childhood in St. Paul, Minnesota, in the late 1920s, Connie Griffith introduces Tootie MacCarthy, a resourceful, sometimes headstrong, 13-year-old girl. Tootie and her friend Joey learn a hard lesson about the ugliness of prejudice, when gypsies come to town. They share the town's dislike for them, until Tootie's retarded brother gets lost, and the gypsies are the ones who find him.
