Teaching Writing: A Structured Approach provides an effective template for writers of all ages to organize their thoughts in a concrete, sequential manner creating a successful composition, essay, story, or career document. The authors found that many writing programs, especially those created for young writers, focus on the length of the writing assignment rather than the writing process. This book offers a systematic plan to inspire and train students to organize their thoughts in a logical manner using five index cards prior to writing a composition or story. Each index card represents an integral paragraph of the finished product. The five cards develop the writer’s ideas logically starting with the opening paragraph, followed by three supporting/detail paragraphs, and ending with the closing paragraph. Breaking down the writing assignment into manageable steps empowers the writer to confidently begin the task rather than feeling overwhelmed. When the writing assignment is more complicated, as is often the case with older students, the three detail cards may be expanded to include additional information required for the document.Teaching Writing: A Structured Approach contains twenty writing prompts. Each prompt is accompanied by a scripted lesson plan which utilizes the five index cards to form the foundation for writing a successful composition. The authors found, from their many years of teaching a diverse spectrum of students, that this writing process inspired and trained even the most “reluctant” writers to achieve success in writing. The process used in this book aligns with the requirements of many of the common core and state writing standards across multiple grade levels. Additionally, this structured writing approach is an excellent resource for micro schooling, home schooling, and pandemic pod teaching. The writing process described in Teaching Writing: A Structured Approach is a successful method which supports and complements Writer’s Workshop instr
