Granville Island was constructed in 1915 on two sand bars in False Creek, near downtown Vancouver. This publication traces the history of this island from its beginnings as an industrial area through its decline in the 1950s-60s to its revitalization under the management of the Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation. The publication focusses on the Island's current state as a multi-use commercial centre, urban space, and community. It describes a typical day in life on the Island, the Island's markets, restaurants, night life, arts & cultural attractions, educational institutions, festivals & events, sports & recreational activities, and industrial operations. The final chapter discusses the reasons for the Island's success.
