Dan Kruger, that singular, offbeat private eye with a penchant for mavericks and lost souls, is back in his most challenging case yet. For thirty days Kruger has been confined to a detox clinic after a particularly harrowing lost weekend, even for him. The day of his discharge a vulnerable young woman comes asking for his help as a detective. The case sound straightforward enough -- recover some lost property belonging to her lover. Except the property is in the hands of a lunatic cosmetics heiress who is into some heavy-duty terrorism in the name of Animal Rights -- and who is holding on tight to what she's got. Common sense (never Kruger's strong suit) tells him to walk away fast. Instead, he gets himself entangled in a national battle royal which deceives him at every turn. At once the hunter and the hunted, Kruger has his equilibrium staggered as he discovers the power of the forces he is fighting. By deadly game's end, havoc has been wreaked on many lives.
