The Most fortunate travellers to Crete have their first sight of the island as their ship approaches Iraklion at dawn. As the sky lightens, and if the morning is clear, they will see behind the coastal plain and above the low hills of Knossos some of the mountains, extending east and west throughout the island's length. With so much surviving from the past and so much that is modern, Crete is a marvellous mixture of old and new with regard to its people as well as its lanscape and buildings. To travel through Crete is to travel through history. The authors describe this glorious island in all its aspects: its topography and geology, history in ancient times and under the Venetians, the Turks and then the Greeks, rural and urban life and the amenities that are available to visitors.
