Why do so many high school students drop out, and what are the consequences for the students, their families, and society in general? This work discusses answers to these questions, and examines topics dealing with the issues, policies, and problems associated with leaving school early. Itlooks at the reasons behind the decision to drop out, the labor market difficulties that dropouts face, the psychological experience of unemployment, the relationship between dropouts and various kinds of deviance, and the dropouts' own expectations about their futures.
