The purpose of this book is to present a pictorial record of a city's early buildings before it is too late. Early Adelaide Architecture contains 191 photographs of buildings erected before 1887 in the City of Adelaide. These photographs were all taken by S.H. Gilbert and are supported by full captions giving wherever possible details of the designs, construction, ownership and tenancy of the buildings illustrated. The importance of a record such as this has been shown by the fact that since the photographs were taken a number of the buildings have been demolished. But Early Adelaide Architecture, with its fine illustrations and fascinating glimpses of history in Sir Edward Morgan's detailed annotations, will also be of great value to anyone interested in Adelaide and its architecture, in the development of an Australian city.
