In two brilliant exhortatory essays, Lawrence set out to redefine the unconscious as "only another word for life". Roused by Freud's resurrection of the unconscious, he describes its biological nature, shows how both society and the individual have failed to exploit it, and suggests revolutionary changes in education to accommodate and develop it. Lawrence's emphasis on the inarticulate side of human nature is a key to the understanding of his novels; his imaginative arguments and supple prose persuade and excite as disturbingly today as they first did fifty years ago.
