The Romance of the Three Kingdoms (also known as Romance of the Records of the Three Kingdoms and Popular Romance of the Records of the Three Kingdoms) is a long chapter historical romance novel created by Luo Guanzhong, a novelist in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. It is based on Chen Shou's Records of the Three Kingdoms and Pei Songzhi's annotations as well as folk stories and legends about the Three Kingdoms and is the result of artistic processing. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a re-creation through artistic processing by Luo Guanzhong based on the storytellers' scripts, operas and anecdotes about the Three Kingdoms in the Song and Yuan dynasties. It is based on Chen Shou's Records of the Three Kingdoms written in the Jin Dynasty and Pei Songzhi's annotations for Records of the Three Kingdoms by a person from the Southern Song Dynasty. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is roughly divided into five major parts: the Yellow Turban Uprising, the turmoil caused by Dong Zhuo, the struggle for hegemony among various heroes, the tripartite confrontation of the Three Kingdoms, and the reunification of the Three Kingdoms by the Jin Dynasty. It describes nearly a hundred years of historical events from the late Eastern Han Dynasty to the early Western Jin Dynasty. It mainly describes wars and portrays the separatist chaos and battles among various heroes in the late Eastern Han Dynasty and the political and military struggles among the states of Cao Wei, Shu Han and Eastern Wu. Eventually, Sima Yan unified the Three Kingdoms and established the Jin Dynasty. It reflects the transformation of various social struggles and contradictions during the Three Kingdoms period and summarizes the great historical changes of this period. It also creates a group of heroic figures of the Three Kingdoms who are powerful and influential.
