Intro to the FlowGayatri, perhaps the most famous and chanted mantra of them all, is also personified as both Savitri (the Sun), and also as Vedamata – the Mother of the Vedas. As such, She is the Mother of all Language, and what is the highest form of language? Poetry. (Beyond words there is the greatest of them all – Silence – and all else is poor translation, as the great Sufi poet Rumi once said.)Thus, the work before you – Gayatri Poetry – is a tribute to the Great Mother by honoring the light and inspiration She brings through the written word. And the hope is that the poems and prose collected herein will be both of use for aspiring yogis and yoga teachers, and also perhaps even help to awaken our inner poet. It is a common practice in the yoga world to read a poem near the close of class, often at the end of Shavasana, and this anthology was largely put together for that purpose.So Jaya (Victory) to the Divine Mother, and Jai to the Poet within all of us!
