Not illustrated. 1801 edition. Excerpt:... Next followed a great concern; the proprietors had the mortification just as their schemes were arriving at maturity, to witness the dreadful conflagration of their mill. Suffice it for me to point the reader's attention to this concern. It commanded wealth and superior speculation, though it could only be denominated a monopolizing concern. Now then I have pointed out the origin of this great national evil. There had been no combination before the period alluded to, nor for some years after; but it opened the eyes of daring men, who began to distinguish the superior advantages of a fluctuating market without the danger of the pillory before their eyes. I wish to place a pillory in their view, and subject them to all the dangers of punishment, if in future they shall have the temerity to. persist in their bold and wicked conduct. They partake of the above unfortunate gentleman DEGREESs iniquity, without the crime of having perjured themselves. Should they continue their practices, why not exalt them? I labour under the unfortunate impediment of being too diffuse, perhaps, in my observations; but I must be tedious on a subject that requires so much illustration. Let me come closer to the point. Do I know my subject? As the accomptant and correspondent to a corn and flour-factor, I had ample rpom afforded me for information, and it may be presumed I am not ignorant on these subjects. Ye speculating men; hyena like, nay crocodile race, too long the bakers have suffered under your lash, too long the country has groaned under your iniquity! but let me not do an act of injustice-r-in respect to the ReTurns, I believe the gentleman whom I acted under, was an honourable man, --he Was not pne of the leading men; but he was looked on with jealousy.
