Purchases and Stock of Stores.--A summary under several heads of stock at beginning of month, of purchases during month, and of stock at end of month is forwarded. Sales.--The gold is sold through an agent resident at a large town in the district, so that there is an account of gold forwarded to him from the mine, and an account from him of the value of the gold, with amount of deductions for assays, &c. Cash Account.--A copy of the " Cash Account" from the mine ledger (see next part) is made and forwarded. Ore Raised and Treated.--An account is sent which shows amount and value of ore in stock at beginning of month, raisings for the month, and stock at end of month. There is also a complete monthly amalgamation account, similar to that described on p. 60; besides which a briefer amalgamation account is forwarded every week. In many cases a well-designed, if not very elaborate, analysis of costs would greatly enhance the value of accounts sent home from mines abroad. For although sufficient data for the making of such an analysis may be included in the information sent, yet the draughting of it by a clerk who has little conception of what a mine is like, and who cannot be overlooked in his work by the mine-manager, is scarcely likely to lead to either useful or reliable results. These analyses should show clearly the cost of each class of work, and also what cost appertains to development and prospecting, and what to working expenses properly so called.
