EARL GRENVILLE KILLEEN (author of The North Light Book of Acrylic Painting Techniques, 1995) offers us a different way to look at and respond to the machinery around us that, in spite of its eye-filling size, we may often pass by without noticing. This collection of Earl's TOTEMICS series of watercolors will show you the hulking machines that posed for the paintings, and some of the steps in the creation of the artwork. These paintings blur the genre line between still-life and portrait. Each subject is a rusted-metal segment of a heavy earth-moving machine, inert and still. But each is also enlivened by a sense of latent energy and the suggestion of an animate creature, whether it seems a familiar or a fanciful one. The mood or state of being or the identity of the imagined creature gives each painting its title. EARL and RAECHEL KILLEEN, who met at The Art Students' League in NYC, both live in towns on the CT Shoreline, and have been partners-in-art for almost 40 years.
