Did you know that sexual trauma does not work its way into the hippocampus for long-term memory processing the way non-trauma events do? Instead, trauma events sometimes don't make their way past the amygdala where a game of catch happens between the amygdala and the pre-frontal cortex, causing trauma survivors to "toss" their trauma back and forth between the two areas of the brain, inciting a heightened and consistent state of fight-or-flight.This is why for trauma survivors, trauma that happened many years ago can feel like it happened yesterday. Trauma events, if left unprocessed, never make their way to long-term memory storage in the brain. Over time, this trains a survivor's body to unconsciously respond physiologically to those trauma experiences. This book serves to generate an inner dialogue that examines that trauma as well as the effects it has had on various aspects of your life. It can be used as a tool of self-exploration, but it can also be used as a springboard for deeper conversation with a licensed therapist or trusted friend. This book cannot do the heavy lifting of healing - that is something that can only come from within; however, it is my hope that you are able to use these prompts to begin generating a map of what that healing can look like.
