Not illustrated. 1907 Excerpt:... all, as well as the greater part of the Sandjak of Elbassan, but on the other hand they include almost the entire region between the vilayet of Monastir and the Greek frontier, the population of which is almost entirely Greek, and the result is naturally an immense majority for the Greeks: in spite of which, there are writers bold enough to aver that the population of Macedonia is not exclusively Greek. The Bulgarians give the name of Macedonia in general to that portion of Turkey which the Treaty of San Stefano assigned to Bulgaria but which the Treaty of Berlin replaced under the direct rule of Turkey. True, the activity of the Bulgarian schools and churches does extend somewhat beyond the limits of this particular Macedonia, but the term is on the whole a fairly accurate one. Within these boundaries the work is carried on at high pressure, and the result is that scientific statistics cannot fail to establish the preponderance of the Bulgarian element in «Macedonia». The Servians are wiser. As they are in a minority in both the Greek and the Bulgarian Macedonias, they speak only of Macedonia and Old Servia, by which designation they imply districts where their only rivals are Albanians--i. e. the region to the north of the Shar Planina. The Roumanians have not yet taken up the study of comparative statistics. The three principal protagonists, Moslems, Greeks and Bulgarians are each in the right when they claim to have the majority in Macedonia--provided it is born in mind that each assigns a different meaning to the word.
