This issue of Social Research examines the idea of violence from a variety of perspectives. Violence can be seen as a manifestation of certain ideas people have acquired from their environment, the autonomous behavior of individuals, or the product of human interrelations. The papers presented in this issue deal with these perspectives, thus illuminating the various dimensions to aggression and the use of force against others. The notion of violence is also considered in reference to its depiction in film, the notion of protection, punishment, identity, women, and religion.
