I’m inviting you into my life where abuse and damage gave way to strength and resilience. I want my memories to move you. But more importantly, I want the first half of this book to inspire you and the second half to motivate you. BEING for the sake of BEING doesn’t lead to enlightenment. Even Buddha got up from under that tree and started teaching. DOING rooted in BEING is what leads to enlightenment. SELF is difficult to describe in words. It’s your deep existence - your essence - your light. SELF cannot be identified. It’s not your title, your gender, your race, your familial role, your championships, your awards, your degrees, your possessions, and it sure as hell isn’t your past. You have to strip all that “stuff” away – go deeper than any answer you would give if someone said, “Tell me about yourself.” Underneath all that is where you’ll find SELF. Life offers no shortage of opportunities for us to demonstrate SELF awareness and history is full of our failure to do so. We don’t even have to go that far back. From hoarding toilet paper to the inability to social distance. From 8 minutes and 46 seconds of one man’s knee on another man’s neck to a mob of domestic terrorists attacking the Capitol Building simply because their candidate didn’t win. The first three chapters of this book are about “in here” and the last three chapters are about “out there” because I genuinely believe the bettering of “out there” stems from the bettering of “in here”. It doesn’t matter what the social plague is, the foundation of the progress must be consciousness. We cannot do better, both as individuals and as the collective, without being better. We cannot be better without consciousness. In here, out there, and everywhere in between, consciousness requires us to be comfortable being uncomfortable.
