"But if a sick man either by reason of extremity of sickness, or for want of warning in due time to the curate, or for want of com. pany to receive with him, or by any other just impediment, do not receive the sacrament of Christ's body and blood; the curate »hall instruct him, that if he do truly repent him of his sins, and sted. faslly believe that Jesus Christ hath suffered death upon the cross for him, and shed his blood for his redemption; earnestly remem. bering the benefits he hath thereby, and giving him thanks there. fore; he doth eat and drink the body of our Saviour profitably to his soul's health, although he do not receive the sacrament with his mouth." The true meaning of the words "verily and indeed," as only in. timating a strong and repeated asseveration, is best explained by our Lord, in the passage vrhence they were taken: "AlyJtesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed," John vi, 55, which he afterwards explains in a figurative or spiritual sense: " The jlesh profiteth nothing: the words which I speak unto you, they are tpirit and they are life," John vi, 63. And surely these texts confirm, by the highest authority, the foregoing passages of the Catechism, Articles, and Rubric. It still remains, therefore, for the advocates of Romish faith, first to prove their assumption, that the crucified and glorified body of Christ is "verily and indeed there," before it can be " verily and indeed taken and received," in their literal sense: an assumption, indeed, which is considerably worse than ' nontense," because it has done more to prevent the propagation of genuine Christianity, and to promote infidelity, th...
