
The days of employees working for a single entity for 30+ years and then retiring with a dependable pension are practically extinct. Far too often, employees find themselves professionally abandoned for reasons beyond their control. Losing your job inadvertently yields fear, uncertainty of the future, and an underlying feeling of letting down your loved ones. Companies, however, are not the only ones that can adapt. To survive in today's job market, we must adjust our views of the professional world. We must be versatile and flexible. We should be ready at a moment's notice to move along to the next great adventure. We must travel lightly and live conservatively. In essence, we must be modern day Career Cowboys to adapt and thrive in today's professional wilderness. This short read is a compilation of four very challenging years of my professional and personal growth and development. My family and I endured relentless hardships and learned lessons along the way. As a scientist, I documented my journey with hopes it might help others who need help as I did. This book will discuss these skill sets; survival, growth and advancement, and the importance of community. By the end of this journey and the beginning of your new adventure, you should have the basic career cowboy knowledge required confidently survive in a highly-competitive and fluid professional environment. This pandemic and global economic crisis is likely leaving many families feeling as we did four short years ago.
