
What is the status of cancer in the African American community? Sadly, it is not good. Cancer is having a devastating effect currently on the health of people of color in the USA. The prospects for the future are not good either. Here are the alarming facts. One in two African American men will get cancer in his lifetime. For women, the number is a little bit better at one in three. For men, the top 4 cancer killers are (in order): prostate, lung, colon, and pancreas. For women, the top 4 killers are (in order): breast, lung, colon, and pancreas. Of great concern is the literal epidemic of aggressive breast cancer in younger and younger women in recent years. What is different about the African American community that deserves a separate book regarding cancer? Are African American people's cancers fundamentally different from the cancers of other groups in the USA? The answers are that while we humans are basically alike, there are some key differences attributable primarily to skin color (for example, our darker skin from our extra melanin makes it more difficult to produce vitamin D from sunlight), lifestyle factors, and numerous other cultural variations.
