Specific Character.--Stem decumbent; leaves sublinear, obtuse; Varieties.--These are very numerous, but the most distinct is that flowers pedunculate, terminal, and axillary; corolla campanulate, fivecalled G. P. guttata, figured in Bot. Mag. t. 1101. cleft. Description, &c.--This is a very singular-looking plant, from the great disproportion that exists between the leaves and the flowers, the stem and the leaves being very small, and the flowers very large. The species is common in many parts of England; but the variety guttata is only found on the Continent. This variety differs from the species only in having a few white spots inside the flower. 9.--GENTIANA ACAULIS, Lin. THE STEMLESS GENTIAN, OR COMMON GENTIANELLA.
