Eose was much more so than formerly; to speak to Mrs. Bell of marriage with Eose, to his delicately poised and nervous nature--a nature so respectful to human liberty--was a false move. He could not bring himself to it without first knowing what sort of acceptance he would find with Eose herself. But he made no secret before Mrs. Bell of his admiration; everything was open and above-board in his theories and practice. If she had put her veto on the marriage it should have been done earlier; he felt it could hardly be a serious veto now. That autumn again the walls of the Castle of Duin sheltered guests. Mrs. Landor rejoiced in surrounding herself with the presence, the life, the interests of youth. The Vicar of Knowlesworth was often with his aunt; she saw, although he had never openly avowed it, his inclination for Laura, and wished their marriage; she therefore invited Mrs. Bell and her daughters again to her mountain home; and Ernest, having heard of it, quietly wrote to her asking if she could receive him. He had once said, 'It is not right to be proper,' by which he expressed somewhat crudely a peculiarity of his nature. Where others were timid he was bold, and an act over which an ordinary man would not hesitate, met in him with scruples of infinite delicacy. The letter of the law was no more to him than to David of old, when he ate the shewbread. In just the same spirit, simple and bold, Ernest, who knew that Mrs. Landor liked him, quietly re-invited himself to her castle. He met with a hearty response, which proved to him that he had not gone too far. It was like a renewing of the past. Laura's dark brown glistening eye had gained in expression; a gentle tenderness--the fruit of suffering, of mental tension--pervaded...
