Excerpt:... Sancho had been dispatched to the house where the waggon stopped, to know if there were any package for the rectory; he returned with the pleasing intelligence that there were two. "One," he said, " he thought was a whiskey." "A whiskey!" exclaimed the two boys, who soon put on their hats, and before the rector could stop them were at a considerable distance. The good man deliberately foHowed them. When the whiskey was unpacked, many were the exclamations of delight and admiration at the beautiful carriage. The boys were in ecstacies. William said, it was much too pretty for old Jack to draw; "and as you have afforded yourself a whiskey, sir," continued he,. "I hope you will afford yourself another horse." "Indeed I shall not," replied the rector; "bless me, boys, are you mad? do you want to ruin me quite? And see, there is old Sancho coming, followed by a man leading two ponies, and a smart groom upon a fine spirited animal. I suppose you wish me to engage them in my service too." "Oh," said William, "if you were in earnest, how happy I should be." The horses had by this time approached close to the party; when the groom, bowing,' presented a letter, which, he said, Mr. Stewart's steward in London desired he would give to Mr. Villars. The boys stood on tip-toe expectation while, with a grave face, the rector read the letter; when he had finished it, he shook his head, and exclaimed, " This is more than I can afford."
