If it should be criticised as being too brief, perhaps it will also be recol lected, that it would have been far easier to write such a work in twenty volumes than in two; but in that case, the latter end of the history would certainly have forgotten the beginning and the principal object, that of presenting a general 50n d'wz'l which might be grasped by the mind at once, would have been defeated altogether.
