This book, as a significant work on character study, is one of the two transmission systems of Shuo Wen together with Shuo Wen Jie Zi written by Xu Xuanben. It is distinctive for its explanation of phonetic loan characters, reference and its application of Shuo Wen in the explanation of ancient texts.
