Dr. Paul Schmidt never imagined he’d practice medicine in the Faroe Islands. Yet here he was, blackmailed into plying his trade as a guise for his true mission: travel among the eighteen islands and select one suitable for a settlement of Nazi refugees, scientists, and their German nuclear technology. Some, in a disintegrating Reich, imagined the planned colony to be like the phoenix rising from the ashes—a new start on an isle of volcanic origin bordered by fjords and tapering sounds.
