Death is stalking 16-year-old "Cowboy". The teen is an easy target, living on the streets, not knowing who he is or where he comes from. Cowboy has been homeless for as long as he can remember, cared for by Emma, a kindly street woman who found him as a toddler. His hard but carefree existence veers off course when he protects a teen girl from a cutthroat gang, placing him squarely in their sights. Tensions mount with the mysterious night visits of a figure Emma calls the Highwayman, the renewed efforts of Death, and the unexpected romance that develops with the girl.Repeated supernatural encounters with the Highwayman convince Cowboy that the man, if he is a man at all, holds the key to the teen's hidden past and his prospects of escaping Death. The frustrating, wonderful friendship with the girl only complicates matters as he wages a desperate battle of survival against the gang. Then suddenly, in the midst of the mayhem, the door to Cowboy's past cracks open - but the astonishing truth may not be enough to save him.
