It's a simple game in which one participant names something and the other must describe it (i.e., "A cave is... a place to get lost in and a place to find your way out of"). In this new edition of Stolz's 1968 book (HarperCollins; o.p.), both text and illustrations have been revised and updated. The descriptive game is played by a boy and his father who are fishing from a rowboat; the earlier version shows a boy painting on an easel. New full-page realistic color paintings, which have a childlike quality about them, have replaced Edward Franscino's pale watercolor-washed pen-and-ink cartoonlike illustrations. This is a book that needs to be presented by an imaginative adult who will continue the game with young listeners. Its text, which can be used to stir both creativity and language skills, could provide an effective jumping-off point in elementary language units.
