The first volume of this two-volume edition of MacDiarmid's "Complete Poems" reprints the texts of the Penguin edition (1986), which was based on the first edition of 1978, which MacDiarmid himself saw through the press. Additional poems discovered since the first edition of 1978 are included, and the additional text revised. MacDiarmid insisted that his "Complete Poems" should be books of poetry, uncluttered by editorial annotations and notes. Michael Grieve, the poet's son, and W. R. Aitken, his bibliographer, have carefully followed his instructions, and compiled an extensive glossary based on the earlier collections.
The central conflict involves the poet's attempt to synthesize Scottish national identity with the expansive, often contradictory, intellectual currents of the twentieth century. MacDiarmid utilizes a complex, multi-layered voice to challenge the linguistic and cultural constraints of his era, often oscillating between Scots vernacular and formal English. His objective is to construct a totalizing vision of human experience that incorporates science, philosophy, and politics. The narrative framework is primarily lyrical and experimental, reflecting the poet's commitment to radical intellectual inquiry and formal innovation.
Discussion often centers on MacDiarmid's role as a pivotal figure in the Scottish Renaissance and his unique approach to language. Readers frequently highlight the density of his work, noting that the poems require significant engagement with both Scottish history and European intellectual traditions. Critics often debate the effectiveness of his synthetic language experiments, which sought to create a new, elevated medium for poetic expression. The collection is widely regarded as a foundational text for those interested in the evolution of modern verse and the political dimensions of literature. The balance between lyrical intensity and didactic ambition remains a primary focus for scholars and enthusiasts alike.
