Van Diemen's Land was the name of the British crown colony and a name for the island of Tasmania. The name of the colony was changed to Tasmania in 1856. In 1837 a young woman was convicted of theft and sentenced to seven years in the colony of Van Diemen's Land. How would she cope with life in the new land? Would she be able to survive her seven years in the convict system? Would she be able to build a life for herself? Would she be able to find friends and perhaps a husband? Would she be able to return to her home in Edinburgh?
