'Nor ought I,' continued he, 'to omit the great Osiris, brother and husband of Isis, who were enamoured of each other in their mother's womb, at which time she became pregnant with the god Orus. Osiris is the Phœbus of the Egyptians, and Isis is their Phœbe. The former holds in one hand the augurial wand of a pontiff, and in the other a whip with two thongs. The apparel of the god is of the colour of fire, is kept with great care, and only exposed once a year to public view. Orisis is represented with the head of a hawk and the body of a man.
