Not illustrated. 1864 Excerpt:...our gracious heavenly Father? Does not He delight to hear His children's broken thanksgivings? Does He despise their feeble efforts to give Him praise? Oh, no! His ear is open to their praises, as well as to their prayers; however feeble the effort, if it proceed from a sincere and humble heart, God will accept it according to the desire. It has been remarked that all the occupations of heaven must be begun upon earth. So it is with praise: they who praise God in heaven, will learn the song of praise while dwelling here below. "Saints below, with heart and voice, Now in songs of praise rejoice; Learning here, by faith and love, Songs of praise to sing above." Oh, let us, as children of God, seek more earnestly for a spirit of thanksgiving and praise to our Father; let us cultivate a spirit of thankfulness, remembering the Divine injunction,--" In everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God." We see here, what we find in numerous other places in Scripture,--that prayer and praise are joined together; nor can they be lawfully put asunder, because God hath joined them. We shall be more happy Christians, and more useful Christians too, as we endeavour to be more thankful Christians. And that we may be more thankful, let our thoughts be raised above the low cares of this life;--let us, according to our Lord's own gracious invitation, roll all our care upon Him; and our eyes being fixed on Him who is altogether lovely, we shall find abundant cause to praise Him all our days. And soon, very soon, the season of prayer will be ended; for the pilgrimage will be finished,--the eternal home will be reached; and then we shall praise for ever, and that perfectly,--as now we long to do, but cannot....
