Grounded by a children-centred lens, this book explores how systems of power in Canada have exerted their control over policy issues related to children andchildren’s rights. Using Norman Fairclough’s method of critical discourse analysis, the authorexamines key moments in the Canadian history of childcare between 1984 and 2017. While theconstructions of childhood and the collective identities of children, including the views andvalues related childcare, have changed significantly throughout Canada’s history, what remainsconstant are the political decisions to place society’s adult-centric economic interests over theneeds of children.ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dr. Terra Johnston earned her PhD from the University of Manitoba’sFaculty of Social Work.
