The only way to become a project manager is to get hired as one, and the only way to get hired is to pass a project management job interview. As someone who has coached over a hundred clients one-on-one for the past five years, I know there are two common ways that candidates approach project-management interviews, and neither of them is ideal. The two types of project managers The first group, around 80% of candidates, don't prepare at all or only briefly skim the company website. There are various reasons for this, such as being too busy, overly confident, or simply not knowing how to prepare effectively. They tend to rationalise their lack of preparation, thinking they've been managing projects for years and have already experienced enough. They believe that they can just be themselves and that if the job is theirs, they'll be hired regardless. The remaining 20% of candidates prepare for the interview by trying to predict the exact questions that will be asked during the interview. They search online for lists of questions, hoping to memorise specific answers that might come up during the actual interview. Although this approach is better than not preparing at all, it is still not very effective. Sometimes the candidate will get lucky, and a few rehearsed questions will come up, but other times, they will get unexpected questions, resulting in lengthy and vague answers. The interview flow will be disrupted, and the candidate will sound fluent for a few minutes and then mumble for the rest of the interview.<br/
