What exactly is a fact family? A fact family is a collection of math facts that use the same numbers. Fact families are groups of related multiplication and division facts that share the same numbers. For example, the fact family for the numbers 2, 4, and 8 consists of the following four facts: 2 x 4 = 8 4 x 2 = 8 8 ÷ 4 = 2 8 ÷ 2 = 4 As you can see, each fact in the fact family involves the same three numbers, but the numbers are used in different ways. The first two facts show the multiplication of two of the numbers to get the third, while the last two facts show the division of the third number by one of the other two to get the remaining number. Knowing the multiplication and division facts that make up a fact family can be useful for developing fluency in basic arithmetic, as well as for solving more complex problems that require these basic operations. For example, if you know that 8 ÷ 4 = 2, you can use this fact to solve a problem like 24 ÷ 4 = 6, by recognizing that 24 is three times larger than 8 and dividing by 4 three times to get the answer. Overall, fact families provide a useful framework for understanding the relationship between multiplication and division, and can help students build a strong foundation in basic math skills.
