One hundred years have passed since the establishment of a permanent military intelligence organization with the War Department in 1885. Publishing a history on the role which modern military intelligence has played in the life of the Army and the nation seemed a fitting way to mark the anniversary. Because of the nature of the subject matter and the limited amount of accessible research sources, official Army histories have tended to integrate the contribution of intelligence into more general works and have not isolated it as a specialized topic. A picture history of military intelligence is believed to be a suitable format for an introductory study. The use of images permits the telling of a story which might otherwise remain untold while at the same time preserves a balance in coverage between the early and recent years (taken from the Foreword by James L. Gilbert). Dr. John Patrick Finnegan (1936-2002) graduated magna cum laude from Boston College in 1957 with an A.B. in English
This volume investigates the historical development and operational evolution of the United States Army's military intelligence organization from its formal establishment in 1885 through its centennial. Authors John Patrick Finnegan and Romana Danysh utilize a visual-centric historical framework to document the integration of intelligence functions into the broader structure of the Army. By synthesizing archival records and photographic evidence, the authors provide a specialized overview of a field that has historically been subsumed within general military narratives.
