Author Description

Leela is a research scholar who visits the prostitution district of Sonagachi in Calcutta to see if a case could be made for legalising prostitution. She meets the formidable Mohini Devi, the madam of a prominent brothel who takes her through the inner motivations that drive the sex trade. The encounter leads Leela to question if the sex workers of Sonagachi were exploited or in some strange way, empowered.
