Clausewitz, like Sun Tzu, is eminently quotable. Few catch the subtlety of his logic, because Clausewitz cannot be understood without some understanding of Hegelian dialectics of thesis, anti-thesis and synthesis. Casual readers take the easier route by quoting phrases; e.g. "We have the only means of war - the battle"; "Only a great and general battle can produce great results"; "Let us not hear of generals who conquer without bloodshed".
