They all relate to the study Of\1iving things ranging from the phagocyte to the gorilla, from the pond-snail to the Russian giant, from facts about longevity to theories as to human progress and the cruelty of Nature. Most of the chapters were written originally for publication in daily and weekly journals and have been now to some extent re-written and illustrated by text figures for the present volume.
