The area around Pecos, Arizona is desert but peaceful except for the occasional bandit. The Wild West frontier has been declared closed and law and order has been brought to the west. In the Pecos area, that law and order is handled by U.S. Marshal Jethro Hawk. But when people start disappearing under mysterious circumstances, including a bank robber that Hawk was pursuing, he begins to wonder if the west isn’t still wild. When a college professor and his students out in the desert looking for signs of ancient life are attacked and two of them are killed, they bring Hawk a story that he finds hard to believe. Then, a hard-bitten rancher and one of his hands, a former soldier and veteran of the Indian Wars, tell Hawk the same story, he knows that he has a major problem on his hands. How does a lawman deal with a deadly creature that’s not even supposed to exist? Hawk has to find the answer, and find it soon.
