A taut, fast-paced Western tale with a supernatural tint. "The Blind White Girl with the Purple Face" is set in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in 1872. It follows a caravan of African-American homesteaders led by Dr. Foster Jenkins, a Civil War hero who is married to a blind white woman. Dr. Jenkins is a renowned figure and well-known in the nation's capital. The group has had a relatively benign trip until a gunshot rings out and a ghastly howl comes roaring out of the vast desert. Upon further inspection Dr. Jenkins realizes they are being stalked by a group of Civil War criminals known as the Palmetto Reavers. The homesteaders gain a pair of unlikely allies in Colonel James Erl, the former leader of the Reavers, and his massive canine companion. The eerie arrival of the two is shrouded in mysterious links to the past and a supernatural air of suspicion develops. Distrust and apprehension grip the band as they prepare for the showdown with the vicious outlaws. A true page-turner that makes for a quick and easy read.
