FROM THE PREFACE: This atlas is designed to provide basic information about U.S. foreign relations. It was first published in 1983, and this is the second, revised edition. It con- sists of 90 displays, chiefly maps and charts, and is divided into six sections covering foreign relations machinery, international organizations, elements of the world economy, trade and investment, development assistance, and national security. For the second edition, most of the displays have been revised or brought up to date, and some have been ex- panded or recast to reflect more recent developments. Most are based on data from official publications of the U.S. Government or international agencies. In a few cases unpublished government data were used. Sources cited on the displays generally refer to the sources of raw data used in devising maps and charts and not to the commentary.
This atlas investigates the fundamental structures and historical data points that define the scope and mechanics of United States foreign relations. Author Harry F. Young compiles a comprehensive visual reference intended to clarify the complex machinery of American diplomacy and international engagement. By utilizing official government data and international agency statistics, the text provides a structured framework for understanding the economic, security, and organizational pillars of U.S. foreign policy. The work serves as a foundational reference for students and researchers seeking to visualize the geopolitical and economic footprint of the United States.
