This new and enlarged Oxford Book of Medieval Latin Verse gives a representative selection from the vast output of Latin poetry, religious and secular, from the third century to about the year 1300. It includes not only famous hymns and sequences, but selections from epic poetry and a large number of secular lyrics from various manuscript collections. Since Sir Stephen Gaselee’s original volume was published in 1928, ‘new’ poets have come to light and the importance of the work of other poets has been more fully recognized. The new Oxford Book is in essence a fresh selection, with notes for the benefit of the student as well as the general reader; there is also a new introduction which embodies the results of the latest research. Frederic James Edward Raby (1888-1966) was a Fellow and Honorary Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge, and an FSA Assistant Secretary at His Majesty's Office of Works and Public Buildings, especially supervising ancient monuments.
This volume investigates the breadth and evolution of Latin poetic expression from the third century through the year 1300. F. J. E. Raby, a distinguished scholar of medieval history and literature, compiles this collection to provide a comprehensive overview of both religious and secular verse. The work serves as an updated scholarly framework, replacing earlier editions by incorporating newly discovered manuscripts and contemporary research findings to better represent the medieval Latin tradition.
