One of the most significant developments in the second half of the twentieth century has been the rapid economic transformation of many countries in Asia after World War II. From a situation of widespread poverty and underdevelopment, and with bleak prospects for economic advancement, many of them developed into economic powerhouses. The excitement generated by the miraculous growth of these countries came to an abrupt end when the Asian currency crisis engulfed the region in 1997. This book presents a systematic analysis of the economic transformation of Asia, in the light of the analytical debates in development literature and the events of the recent crisis.
