When it comes to reading, poetry may not be the most popular section in a bookstore. Elementary school exposed us to the narrative poetry of Longfellow, Irish fun songs like “…Overalls in Mrs. Murphy’s Chowder”. Stephen Foster’s lyrics took us back a century. Poetry is elastic, delivering a rhythm of word sounds shaded with hues coloring the mind producing an emotional journey taking the reader to that place, that time or point of view. A journey of words, tempo and rhyme can uplift, delight, inform and challenge perceptions. Inside you will find hypocrisy and bluster of “The Snowman”, a pellet from “The Old Barn Owl”’ the grandeur of “Point Lobos, CA”, respect for “Old Glory at Sunset” and the recipe for “A Gourmands Delight”, to name a few. The poem “Uncommon and Free” was selected by City Lore for their proposed book “Voices Across America”. The narrative poems include sport stories: “To Go or Not To Go”, “Proving Ambition”, and a “Major League Arm” plus a taste of “Baseball and Apple Pie”. A limerick, “Pat, Murphy and O’Leary the Cat” and a “Four Legged Health Coach”, plus “Finding a Golden Rule” completes a trilogy of adventures with man’s best friend. “Looking Out My Window” is separated into chapters of “A Spectrum of Hues, Coloring the Senses” best described as poetic plain speak with “a little of this and a little of that plus a bit of bric-a-brac”. Opinions, not of your liking? Well…“Please Accept my Apogee” Tom Firek
